Alanis

Synopsis

Alanis works as a whore. With her baby and Gisela, a partner several years older, she shares a private room in the city where she lives and works. Ambushed by two municipal inspectors they close their home and take their partner, accused of “white slave traffic”. Alanis arrives with her work clothes and full of tricks to settle in the house of an aunt in Once, a multiracial, transit and violent neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Alanís tries to regain her dignity, help her friend and take care of her son.


Director's bio

Anahí Berneri was born in Buenos Aires in 1975. Her directorial debut with A Year Without Love (2005) won the 'Teddy Award' at the Berlinalel and the Fipresci at the MDQ Film Fest. It was also voted 'Best foreign Film' at the New York Newfest and the Los Angeles Outfest. Encarnación (2007), was presented for the first time in the official competition of the San Sebastián Festival, being awarded the Fipresci prize. Alanis won three awards in the 65th ed. at San Sebastián International Film Festival: 'Silver Shell' for best director, best actress –Sofia Gala– and 'Cooperación Española Award'.
